Diversity and inclusion

At Mitie we believe that equality, diversity and inclusion are key to establishing a vibrant, rewarding culture and helping our company grow in a way that benefits our business, environment, community and people.

That’s why we always aim to represent the diversity of the communities and customers we serve within our own organisation – bringing a range of experiences, perspectives and skills to the boardroom, our in-house teams and even the suppliers we partner with.

Our commitment

Our commitment to inclusivity is realised through leadership and training that promotes inclusive behaviours and more informed decision making. We strive to provide ongoing opportunities for a fully representative workforce and to amplify all our colleagues’ voices. That way we can grow our business and build a future that benefits everyone.

With this aim in mind, we’re continually looking to increase representation in our senior leadership team, reduce the gender pay gap and attract and retain a diverse workforce where everyone can bring their true selves to work. You can read all about our inclusivity targets in our latest annual report.

Over the past year we’ve really professionalised ED&I. We’re making sure our leaders are equipped to make inclusive decisions every single day in everything they do. We know our diversity makes us stronger and we’re proud that our position as a leading British business for ED&I is recognised.

Working together

Our colleagues come from all walks of life and represent all genders and beliefs and over 149 different nationalities. We have colleagues living with disabilities and neurodiversity, those that identify as LGBTQ+, parents, carers, veterans and reservists. And it’s vital that we provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for all of them.

It’s not just about the people who work here though. As a member of Minority Supplier Development UK (MSDUK), we’re able to ensure our supply chain also promotes diversity and inclusion and that ethnic and minority-owned businesses are given the best opportunities. Similarly, our affiliation with Social Enterprise UK (SEUK) ensures we take every opportunity to spend money with charitable and social enterprises.

Our networks

Mitie has six employee networks that make it easy for our colleagues to discuss issues with key decision makers, contribute to new and existing policies and procedures and raise their concerns in a confidential environment. These include:

  • CHORD: Focused on creating an inclusive working environment for people of all races and ethnicities.
  • Proud to Be: A network that helps educate, inform and inspire our people to be themselves by promoting an inclusive culture in the workplace, particularly for the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Mitie Women Can: Dedicated to helping women maximise their potential in an equal workplace.
  • Parents & Carers: Providing a supportive space and engagement opportunities for parents and carers.
  • Mitie Military: For armed forces leavers, veterans and families and friends of the forces.
  • Enable: Raising awareness of disability-related topics across the business, while offering support and guidance to our colleagues.

Mitie Foundation

The Mitie Foundation was established in 2013 to help disadvantaged people explore new life opportunities and break down barriers to employment. The foundation supports the long-term unemployed, those with disabilities, combat veterans, ex-offenders and young people. So far, almost 500 people have completed our Ready2Work programme – and 70% of those have gained employment as a direct result.

Holding us accountable

Our annual reports ensure transparency in our efforts to provide a diverse, inclusive and supportive working environment.

At Mitie we strongly believe that being transparent about the diversity and pay of our workforce is important for creating meaningful change. That’s why we voluntarily disclose our ethnicity and gender pay gap information.
