COVID 19: Sellafield – driving changes to security protocol
Mitie’s security force has worked alongside the Civil Nuclear Constabulary at the Sellafield nuclear facility in West Cumbria for over 8 years, ensuring the site remains safe and secure.
Responding to COVID-19
Due to the operational requirements at Sellafield it is essential the site is kept functional, regardless of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Doing so means implementing extraordinary measures that help protect people from COVID-19 without compromising the safety and security of the site. This is no small undertaking for a site that spans 18km2 and has around 10,000 workers onsite at any time.
In conjunction with the Sellafield Ltd security & resilience, Mitie proposed and implemented temporary security measures while COVID 19 pandemic runs its course.
Subject matter experts
Over the 8 years that Mitie Security have provided security services at Sellafield, an open, trusting and deep partnership has been established with the Civil Nuclear Constabulary. During this time, Mitie security have established themselves as security subject matter experts that propose changes in line with current threats, risks or use of technology.
In these challenging times, this collaborative relationship has been fundamental in ensuring security protocols were updated with unprecedented speed.
“Over the last few weeks here at Sellafield Ltd we have certainly faced some challenging situations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The response to these challenges from our supply chain partner Mitie Total Security has been exceptional since the very beginning from both the Management Team and the Officers whom through their dedication and commitment ensure that we continue to maintain Safe, Secure Operations on site and provide support to the local community where possible.”

Supporting the local community
Keen to assist vulnerable residents during the coronavirus crisis, Head of Operations, David McGrath, has assembled a team of around 30 volunteers from the Mitie workforce at Sellafield.
They are available to charities including Age UK and Age Concern, and are assisting with shopping, errands, picking up prescriptions and more.
David said:
“It’s important we all do our bit to help others who find themselves vulnerable due to Covid-19. I’m really proud that so many colleagues have offered to volunteer at this time. It shows what great people work for Mitie and our commitment to the local community.”
