Shani’s story at Mitie
This is Shani Williamson’s story, Stores Person at Mitie.
Shani wanted a career change but thought apprenticeships were just for school leavers, until she saw her ideal opportunity with Mitie. Having completed her apprenticeship, she’s successfully using her skills and passion for engineering helping to keep hospitals well equipped and running smoothly.
“I would definitely recommend the apprenticeship path – it’s not just for young people – it’s an amazing way to build on your skills and drive your career forward.”
What’s your Mitie story?
“Prior to working for Mitie, I worked in retail. I knew I wanted to change careers, but as a mum of six, I needed to find something that gave me the balance I needed. When my youngest child started school, it was the ideal opportunity to find something I actually wanted to do.
“I saw the advert for an Apprentice Stores Person at the Hospital. At 38, I thought I was too old for an apprenticeship but I applied and was offered the role.
“The role interested me as I have an engineering background. I was keen to learn and progress in my career. I love my job. I liaise with suppliers, am responsible for Health and Safety within the stores and work very closely with the engineers to identify the relevant parts needed to complete a job. They like to test me. They’ll often ask me to find and procure parts to a really tight deadline. I’m a critical part of the process. Without the part, the work cannot be completed!”
What makes you proud to work for Mitie?
“I love the human interaction. I work with so many people and have built great relationships.”
How have you been recognised and rewarded for your work?
“Within a few months of joining, I got employee of the month! Our accomplishments are always announced across the team, which is lovely. I’ve had a couple of Mitie Stars too.”
What advice would you give to others embarking on a career with Mitie?
“Go for it. If you see a job that sparks your interest then give it a try. Whether it’s interacting with people or the job itself, try to find your passion. If you can do this, you’re more likely to be happy at work and enjoy it.
“I would definitely recommend the apprenticeship path – it’s not just for young people – it’s an amazing way to build on your skills and drive your career forward.”
Shani is just one of thousands of dedicated Mitie colleagues, each inspired and enabled to achieve their potential. By combining innovation with intelligence and applying the power of technology, we’re supporting our people to proudly make a difference, every single day.
