Mitie takes off with extension at London City Airport
- London City Airport has extended Mitie’s security contract for another two years
- Mitie’s Security division will help protect the 5 million passengers that pass through the airport annually
- Over 60 employees working on the contract have been uplifted to London Living Wage
Mitie has been awarded a two year contract extension with London City Airport, London’s most central airport. The UK’s leading facilities management and professional services company has provided security at the airport since 2016.
Mitie will continue to provide behind the scenes security services by screening thousands of baggage items every day. The screening monitors check-in luggage for explosives and other prohibited items, ensuring no restricted objects are loaded onto the aircraft. As well as screening baggage, Mitie provides manned guarding and access control to the 120 acre site once the airport closes at night.
Passenger assistance is also an important part of the security service provided by Mitie. Over 20,000 disabled passengers are transported directly from the curb side through to the aircraft every year. As part of the airport’s aim to be the most accessible airport in the UK, Mitie’s Passengers with Reduced Mobility (PRM) team will continue to work closely with the client to spearhead this important service, implementing a range of initiatives to better improve the flying experience for disabled passengers.
As part of the contract, all 64 Mitie employees contracted directly by the airport have been uplifted to London Living Wage, £10.75 per hour, following the airport’s Living Wage accreditation in March this year. London City Airport is also an early adopter of the Mayor of London’s Good Work Standard, a commitment to achieve a set of best practice employment benchmarks. This marks London City Airport as the first UK airport to achieve both milestones.
Jason Towse, Managing Director, Business Services, Mitie, said:
“Our partnership with London City Airport is testament to our leading position in the aviation sector and how clients and suppliers can work together to create a brilliant work culture. Our people work tirelessly protecting the millions of passengers passing through London City Airport every year and I am proud and delighted that they will benefit from the increase to London Living Wage.”
Ian Cowie, Director of Customer Operations, London City Airport, said:
“Mitie continues to offer an essential and professional service for London City Airport, ranging from high quality assistance for our passengers with reduced mobility, to comprehensive and knowledgeable security expertise, to help keep London’s most central airport safe and secure.
Following the airport’s recent accreditation as a Living Wage employer, it’s been a pleasure to work with them, as one of our direct suppliers, to roll out the London Living Wage, and we look forward to an ongoing partnership.”
